Load Centre

A Load Centre is an underground electrical distribution unit used in mines to receive high-voltage power and distribute it safely to various mining equipment such as Continuous Miner, Shuttle Car, Feeder Breaker, and pumps.

It usually consists of a step-down transformer, switchgear, protection devices, and control panels housed in a flameproof enclosure for safety in gassy mines.

Main Functions

  1. Power Distribution
Supplies electrical power to underground mining machines.
  2. Voltage Transformation
Converts high voltage (e.g., 3 kV or 6.6 kV) to lower voltage suitable for equipment.
  3. Protection System
Includes circuit breakers, relays, and protection systems to prevent overload, short circuit, and earth faults.
  4. Control of Equipment
Provides switching and control for multiple underground machines.

Advantages

  • Safe power supply in gassy underground mines
  • Centralized electrical control and protection
  • Reliable power distribution to mining equipment
  • Reduces electrical hazards and equipment damage

Applicability

Load Centres are used in:

  • Continuous Miner mining systems
  • Underground coal mines
  • Areas requiring safe electrical distribution
  • Mines operating high-power electrical equipment
